Why risk education on cluster munitions matters: a deep dive on risk education in the draft Lausanne Action Plan

ORGANIZER

Explosive Ordnance Risk Education Advisory Group (EORE AG)

INFORMATION

The humanitarian consequences of cluster munitions are severe and long-lasting, with civilians accounting for 99 percent of casualties recorded in 2018. The critical role of risk education in protecting civilians from the risks of cluster munitions has been firmly recognised by States Parties in the draft Lausanne Action Plan, which sets out four concrete actions related to this Convention obligation. But what is meant by ‘context-specific, tailor-made risk education’? How can data on contamination and casualties inform risk education? And what exactly does a risk education strategy look like? This side event aims to bring these actions to life through real examples that concretely demonstrate how they can be upheld. Space will also be given for participants to share experiences and challenges.
